Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Senior Industrial Hygienist I, II, or III to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).

The Senior Industrial Hygienist I, II or III recognizes, evaluates, and monitors workplace conditions and work activities to assess worker exposure to safety and health workplace hazards, including chemical, physical, and biological. Provide technical safety and health support, analysis, and direction to establish risk controls and processes that prevent or mitigate injuries, occupational illnesses, property damage, and operational impacts.    

 

Responsibilities

A Senior Industrial Hygienist I (Grade 67):

  • Conducts the monitoring of workplace environments by analyzing work operations, processes, materials, equipment, and work practices of employees
  • Performs advanced assessments of work exposures; designs basic to complex exposure monitoring strategies
  • Measures the magnitude of exposure to workers from environmental hazards by selecting or devising methods and instrumentation suitable for such measurements; and presents specific conclusions and recommendations to appropriate management groups
  • Educates employees on practices, precautions, and procedures
  • Audits programs and conditions at assigned facilities; provides written reports of findings with recommendations for improvement (where needed)
  • Incorporates complete understanding of Industrial Hygiene (IH) practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and programmatic planning where specific detailed objectives are stated
  • Performs comprehensive practices of IH by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors or stresses in the workplace
  • Provides limited guidance and direction to less senior IH professionals.
  • Carries out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases of assignment
  • Ensures compliance with technical regulatory requirements
  • Develops alternate solutions to existing problems, performing research and analysis of background, advantages, impacts, cost, and makes implementation recommendations
  • Evaluates potential work scope, hazards, and risks and makes recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks
  • Prepares manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing technical effort
  • Develops and leads implementation of total quality and continuous improvement initiatives within the group
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional responsibilities for a Senior Industrial Hygienist II (Grade 68):

  • Incorporates conventional and advanced IH practices for assigned facility or programmatic area(s).
  • Applies IH activities such as integrating or complying with complicated technical requirements or application of new or special materials or processes.  Provides IH consultation for challenging coordination or oversight requirements requiring problem solving and programmatic planning where only general objectives are given
  • Provides comprehensive IH support to the facilities such as monitoring programs, procedures, Assisted Hazards Analysis (AHA) and work package reviews
  • Assists management in compliance with technical and regulatory requirements
  • Performs advanced predictive assessments of work exposures.  Designs and conducts comprehensive exposure monitoring strategies for moderately complex to highly complex issues.
  • Provides briefings on hazardous chemicals and performs on-the-job and job performance measurement (OJT/JPM) training
  • Serves as subject matter expert for specific IH disciplines as required by 10 CFR 851, OSHA, ACGIH, EPA and state programs.
  • Communicates results and objectives both verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues, and management.
  • Keeps abreast of industry best practices and changes to the profession
Additional responsibilities for a Senior Industrial Hygienist III (Grade 69):
  • Educates employees and management on practices, precautions, and procedures
  • Takes substantive role in compliance with technical and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrates commitment to quality concepts by active participation and successful implementation of department initiatives

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related physical or biological science and relevant experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related physical or biological science and related experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical discipline and relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications for a Senior Industrial Hygienist I and II:

  • Understands and applies advanced technical knowledge of IH regulations, standard concepts, practices, principles, and techniques; has working knowledge of pertinent IH practices and applications.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in an integrated program (respirators, confined space work, field instrumentation).
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Degree from ABET accredited institution for industrial hygiene
  • Radiological work experience

Additional preferred qualifications for a Senior Industrial Hygienist II and III:

  • Familiarity with infrastructure, roles and responsibilities as IH representative integrated into facility operations
  • Proficiency in conducting exposure assessment using quantitative and qualitative methods, including expertise using sampling/monitoring devices and interpreting data.

Minimum Pay

USD $76,704.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $170,076.00/Yr.
